About thirty miles north east of Yosemite, in a remote part of the desert lies the ghost town of Bodie.

In 1887 gold was discovered in the nearby hills and the population ballooned to 100,000 as the mining companies moved in, and collapsed just as quickly back to a few thousand when the mines turned out to be unprofitable - all in the space of a few years, 1879 to 1881.
